Things I Loved About My Stay at Hôtel des Coutellier
1. The Central Location is Fantastic
You know by now that I am going to tell you to stay as centrally located as possible to the things you want to see and do in a city. I loved the location of Hôtel des Coutellier because it was close to everything I wanted to do and see while ALSO being within walking distance to the train station, Gare du Palais.
When it was time for me to leave Québec City, I had to wake up at 4:30am to get to the train station in time for my train back to the airport. I loved that I was able to safely walk from the hotel to catch my train without having to call an Uber!
Since Hôtel des Coutellier is situated in the heart of Quebec City’s charming Old Town, I found myself just steps away from historic landmarks, cobblestone streets, and the mesmerizing St. Lawrence River. One thing I did want to point out was that I had to walk up a steep hill to get to most of the attractions and famous streets, but hey, a little exercise never hurt nobody. 😉
2. The Front Desk Staff is Incredibly Helpful
Instead of giving you the cliché “I was welcomed by the warm and friendly front desk staff” speech, I’ll elaborate on this section by telling you 2 true stories:
The Front Desk Staff Recommended Amazing Restaurants
If you read my 2 Days in Québec City post, you know that my train broke down on the way from the Montreal airport into Québec City. As if this wasn’t bad enough, it happened on a Sunday, aka the day a lot of restaurants are closed or close early. I hadn’t eaten since breakfast, and by time I arrived into Québec City, it was 8:30pm and I was starving.
In a moment of “hanger” and frustration, I called the hotel before my train arrived and asked the girl who answered if she knew of any restaurants that were open late. I was fully expecting to be told I had to eat at a gas station, but instead, she called around and researched for me and provided me with a list of places I could go.
I thought it was so kind of her to not only look for me, but also give me her input on which places she recommended. I decided on one of the places she suggested – L’Atelier – and could not have been more impressed.
The Front Desk Staff Found Me a Bathing Suit in December
During my stay in Québec City, I learned about Strøm, a Nordic spa with hot tubs and cold plunges. People raved about it, so of course, I had to check it out. There was just one problem: I didn’t bring a bathing suit.
Have you ever tried to find a bathing suit in one of the northernmost countries in the world in December? It’s not easy. I asked the girl at the front desk if there was anywhere that would possibly sell swimsuits during this time of year. She researched some stores and gave me a few suggestions. After turning up empty-handed at a couple places, I eventually found one at La Maison Simons, a retail clothing store in Old Town.
- FYI: I probably could have purchased a bathing suit at Strøm, but it would have been WAY more expensive!
I truly felt the front desk staff went above and beyond for me during my stay at Hôtel des Coutellier. Normally, I’m not an overly-needy hotel guest, but I’ll confess I was during this trip. They never made me feel like a burden or like they were too busy to help me, and I appreciated it so much.
3. Free Breakfast Delivered to Your Room
The breakfast here is adorable. I know…what an odd word to describe breakfast, right? But listen. I woke up my first morning at Hôtel des Coutellier and opened my room door to find a black lunchbox hanging off of the hook on the wall next to my room. I didn’t even realize I would get free breakfast when I booked this hotel! It was such a nice surprise.
Of course, free food on its own is great, but I felt like their breakfast was extra special. I got a chocolate croissant, an apple, a roll, cheese, yogurt, and juice packed into my lunchbox. This paired perfectly with the coffee machine that was already in my room.
The other nice thing about the breakfast here is that it’s different every day! This is a great way to save money as a solo traveler because it’s one less meal that you have to eat out.
4. The Room Aesthetics
You didn’t REALLY think you’d get through this entire post without me gushing about how cute the room was, did you? I love staying at boutique hotels because the rooms always give me that “this could be my bedroom” feeling, and Hôtel des Coutellier was no exception!
The rooms at Hôtel des Coutellier exude charm and character. I was particularly smitten with the adorable brick accent wall in my room, which added a touch of rustic elegance. The attention to detail in the room’s decor made it a cozy and inviting retreat after a day of sightseeing.
In terms of amenities, I found the bed to be very comfortable. My room also had a TV, desk, and couch. There was even a nice space to charge my phone right next to where I was sleeping. My room also had a coffee maker, so I could sip my coffee as I got ready in the morning. The bathroom was a tad small, but it was enough space for me as a solo traveler.
Things I Would Have Changed About Hôtel des Coutellier
Honestly…there is nothing I would have changed. I should point out in this section that I am NOT getting paid to write this blog post. This is simply my honest opinion! I was incredibly happy with my stay here and how I felt like I was “at home” in a new city.
Hôtel des Coutellier Review Summary
In conclusion, my stay at Hôtel des Coutellier in Quebec City was a delightful experience that exceeded my expectations. Its unbeatable location, incredibly helpful staff, complimentary breakfasts, charming rooms, and comfortable beds all contributed to a memorable and exciting getaway.
If you’re seeking a romantic and cozy escape in the heart of Quebec City, I wholeheartedly recommend Hôtel des Coutellier. It’s the kind of place that makes you fall in love with both the city and the hotel itself. I’ll tell you Au revoir! for now, but tbh, I’m already counting down the days until my next visit…
