If you’re wanting to hike the Path of the Gods on the Amalfi Coast and wonder what you’re getting yourself into, allow me to introduce you to one of the most iconic hikes in the world. If we haven’t met, I’m Gina, and I’m an aesthetic traveler whose exercise on vacation comes in the form of walking all over the cities and countries I visit. When I discovered the Path of the Gods while planning my Amalfi Coast trip, I immediately said “sign me up!”

Path of the Gods
This hike is perfect for nature lovers, photographers, adventure seekers, and – of course – aesthetic travelers who want the best views of Italy 😉. You’ll see lush greenery, terraced vineyards, and picturesque villages, all while getting your exercise for the day.
I’ll go ahead and tell you I loved this hike, and would absolutely recommend it to anyone visiting the Amalfi Coast. IMO, the best – and easiest – way to do this hike is with a group tour. I stayed in Sorrento during my Amalfi Coast trip and booked the Path of the Gods From Sorrento hike with Get Your Guide. I loved doing this because I didn’t have to research where to start or end my hike, or worry about how I was going to get there. GYG provided transportation to and from Sorrento, along with a tour guide on our hike, so all I had to do was show up!
I don’t want to spoil the ending for you, but you get wine, bread, and cheese at the end of this hike. YES, you read that correctly. There is a light at the end of this workout tunnel, and it comes in the form of carbs on this adorable little Italian farm. I’m screaming. Just book it.

What Is The Path of the Gods?
The Path of the Gods (Sentiero degli Dei) is one of the most breathtaking hiking trails in the world. It offers incredible views of the Amalfi Coast, the Tyrrhenian Sea, and the rugged cliffs that define this iconic Italian coastline. Stretching from Bomerano (Agerola) to Nocelle (above Positano), this hike immerses you in dramatic landscapes, charming rural scenery, and a sense of history that dates back centuries.
- Fun fact: This trail gets its name from an ancient legend that claims the Greek gods once walked this very path on their way to save Ulysses from the sirens of Capri.
Because I did this hike with Get Your Guide, I am writing this based on my experience with their tour. Hiking times, arrival times, where you start and stop, etc. may be different depending on if you go with a group or do this hike yourself.
Path of the Gods – Fast Facts
- Distance: 7.5 km (4.6 miles)
- Difficulty level: Moderate to hard
- Distance from Sorrento via bus: ~2 hours
What To Bring on Your Hike
- Water
- Sunglasses
- Sun hat
- Sunscreen (especially if hiking in warmer months)
- A light jacket (if hiking in cooler months; I like this light waterproof rain jacket from Amazon!)
- Good shoes (I hiked in sneakers, but if you have hiking boots, bring these)
- Snacks (I never travel without emergency snacks)
- Camera
On my hike, Get Your Guide provided us with hiking poles, so you likely do not need to bring these. If you are someone who absolutely needs them, I would contact your tour operator beforehand just to double check that they will have some available. If you do decide to bring your own, these are the hiking poles I recommend.
What To Expect on Your Hiking Tour
An Overview of Your Hike
There are a few different ways you can do this hike. Some people hike from Bomerano (a town between Sorrento and Amalfi) to Nocelle (above Positano). When I did this hike, we started and ended in Bomerano so the bus could wait for us at the same place it dropped us off. I read that sometimes, this hike with Get Your Guide can start and end in Nocelle, depending on the weather, which guide you have, and what your guide thinks is best.
I truly do not think there is a bad place to start OR end this hike. Since the entire thing is along the coastline, you will get incredible views no matter where you’re at. If you’re disappointed that you don’t get to hike all the way to Positano, don’t be…you can still make time to see this gorgeous town on your trip to the Amalfi Coast. A few people in my group decided to hike the rest of the way to Positano themselves without looping back, so this is also an option for you. Just know that you will have to find your own transportation back to Sorrento.
- If you’re staying in Sorrento for your trip like I did, check out my post about why I decided to spend one night in Positano (and have zero regrets)
Finding Your Meeting Point
When you book this tour, Get Your Guide will give you a meeting point to arrive at in the morning and wait for the bus to pick you up. When I did this tour, we met in Piazza Tasso, Sorrento’s main town square, so it was super easy to find. Make sure to check your booking for details.
One thing I did want to point out was the road was verrrry windy on the way from Sorrento to the starting point of our hike. This was no surprise to me, as I knew all roads in the Amalfi Coast are windy…but make sure to pack Dramamine or get a prescription TransDerm Scop patch if you tend to get carsick.
Arriving At the Starting Point of Your Hike
When we got to Bomerano, our bus dropped us off at a plaza with a cafe so we were able to grab a snack and use the bathroom before we started. There were NO bathrooms on this hike, so plan accordingly! Once we got everyone situated, our guide passed out hiking poles to those of us who needed them, and we were off!
Hiking Path of the Gods
Get Your Guide rated this hike as “medium to hard,” depending on where you start. The path starting from Bomerano is rated as “medium,” and the one starting from Nocelle is rated as “hard.”
Of course, I can’t speak for Nocelle, but I would agree with the Bomerano rating. The path is part dirt, part stone, part hills, and part mule tracks. But don’t let that scare you. The entire thing is so gorgeous that you kind of forget you’re out of breath when you get to the hilly parts.
Having said that, I would not do this hike if you have mobility issues, Our guide did a great job of keeping a steady pace that allowed us to take in the scenery, stop for photos, and let everyone in the group keep up.
Views on Your Hike
The Mediterranean coastline views from this hike live in my head rent-free. I was enamored by the vineyards and greenery on the hillsides, along with the ocean, flowers, and plants.
Keep your eyes peeled for biblical artifacts along the way, such as this Mother Mary statue placed inside an opening in the rock. You’ll also see artsy plaques along the cliffside, along with trails off the main path that lead to old shepherd shelters..
Not long after you leave the Bomerano trailhead, you’ll reach an open panoramic viewpoint where the entire coastline unfolds before you. This is one of the best photo spots on the trail if you want to get the ocean and mountains in your background. I love the contrast between the green and blue.
- Although people on my tour were great at taking photos of each other, I brought this tripod with me, just in case I needed to get some shots myself!
Amalfi Coast, Italy
As I previously mentioned, the hiking path is made up of dirt, rocks, and hills. The left side of the photo below gives you an idea of what a lot of the trail looked like:
Along the way, you’ll also see some animals on the trail, such as goats, sheep, birds, lizards, and even farm dogs. This was one of my favorite parts.
The final point in our hike involved this rock and this view, which is arguably the most famous photo spot on the entire trail. You can see Positano to my right down below. If you decide to leave the group and hike all the way there, expect to find a trail with 1,500 steps that will lead you down into the city. I did not do this part, but I’m sure it’s equally as gorgeous.
- Remember earlier when I said the trail from Nocelle was rated as “hard?” It’s probably because you have to climb UP the 1,500 steps…phew!
Wine and Snacks at the Shepherd’s Hut
But wait! We aren’t done yet. On our way back to the Bomerano trailhead, we stopped at a shepherd’s hut, where we were fed bread, cheese, tomatoes, and wine. As you probably guessed, this was my favorite part. It was so much fun and such a great reward after hiking all that way.
Summary of Hiking the Path of the Gods
Like I mentioned, I would recommend this hike to anyone looking to get the most incredible views of the Amalfi Coast. There was nothing I didn’t enjoy about it (well…other than the 2 hour bus ride to get there. I would have preferred 30 minutes, but I suppose you can’t have everything!).
I thought our guide did an incredible job with making sure everyone on our group had enough time to stop and take photos. He also went at a good pace, making sure no one lagged behind or got lost.
Hiking the Path of the Gods is the perfect way to experience the region’s natural beauty away from the crowds—whether you’re a photographer, a nature lover, or simply looking for an unforgettable adventure. If you haven’t done so already, book this hiking tour here!
