Trying to figure out what to wear to be on trend this winter season? When it comes to fashion trends for winter, I’m finding that I’ve grown to love the new styles just as much as I love the classic items that never go out of style. If you want to look your best in every new city and country you visit, this post is all about my favorite winter fashion trends that are taking up alllll the space in my suitcase.

Disclaimer – the trends I speak about here aren’t just for travel…but they’ll be what I’m wearing when I’m traveling!
As an aesthetic traveler, I care as much about my travel style as I do the places I’m going. I think life is too short not to express yourself, and I believe one of the best ways to do that is through knowing, loving, and owning your personal style. Regardless of how far you’ve come with nailing down your personal style, I hope this post gives you some inspiration to embrace the winter fashion trends that speak to you!
1. Long Wool Coats
When I was in Europe for Christmas, I saw long wool coats evvverywhere. European girls wore these dressed up and dressed down, and somehow managed to effortlessly pull off both looks. I’ll confess, I refused to take part in this trend for a long time, mostly because I thought a long, bulky coat would make me look frumpy…but eventually, I got cold and caved.
TBH, it was the best decision I ever made. My entire body stayed super warm as I explored the European Christmas markets. I also noticed that most of these coats, including mine, did not come up high around the neck…which allows you to style them with a multitude of different scarves and turtlenecks.

2. Sweats (But Make It Fashion)
I don’t know who it was that decided to make sweats into a high-end fashion statement, but I’d like to buy that person a drink. Or at least, go shopping with them.
You can make an outfit look incredibly put-together with the right sweats. My favorite combo is pairing oversized jogger sweatpants with a cropped sweatshirt and combat boots or sneakers. To appease Gen-Z, I have been wearing my socks over my pants and scrunched into my boots. A baseball cap is optional, but never a bad idea if you’re someone who can pull off hats.
IMO, chic sweats are the perfect travel day/airport outfit, especially if you have an early morning flight. You can roll out of bed, throw on your (cute) sweats, and go. You don’t have to spend time on the already-uncomfortable airplane wearing even more uncomfortable clothes. And finally, with chic sweats, you can to arrive to your destination looking effortlessly cool instead of effortlessly homeless.
(both no longer available 😔)
For this reason, a good pair of sweats is one thing that I recommend investing in. It doesn’t have to be your top clothing-investment priority, but put it on your list. My favorite “investment sweats” are from Joah Brown, which I have linked below. I also included socks and leg warmers, which you can pair with leggings or tights.
- Pro Tip: Roll your sweatpants once or twice for a more “snatched waist” look

3. Letting Glam Jewelry Shine Over Basic Pieces
I’ll never forget the time I was little and first heard the famous quote, “Diamonds are a girl’s best friend.” Suddenly, the whole world made sense. Okay, maybe that’s a slight exaggeration, but only slight. The reality is, diamonds elevate everything, and add an exclamation point to any outfit.
Of course, I don’t just mean real diamonds…although if you can go that hard with your jewelry, I support it. I am referring to diamonds and anything that looks like diamonds…cubic zirconia, Swarovski, anything!
Lately, I have become obsessed with tennis necklaces over basic pieces like a plain white, black, or neutral-colored top. Add a matching tennis bracelet, and you are killing it. You can also layer a tennis necklace with a longer necklace for some dimension. My favorite way to do this is to wear my tennis necklace as a choker and pair it with a larger, bulkier piece.
I love packing tennis necklaces to take on trips because they’re so versatile. I can wear them with a dressy outfit, or use them to dress up a plain white T.
I have the two Melinda Maria tennis necklaces that I linked below, and I love both of them. One is an adjustable choker, and the other is a solid 16″. If your loyalty is to Swarovski, I have linked an option from them as well.

4. Shoe Charms
We just talked about jewelry for your body, now we’re talking about jewelry for your shoes. I’ll confess, I’ve never been much of a sneakers person, but shoe charms have swayed me this year. They are so cute, so versatile, and relatively cheap. Plus, they’re the perfect way to add a subtle pop of style to your outfit. If you have an early flight, you can even toss them in your tote bag and put them on at the airport.
The best part about shoe charms is you are able to mix and match. I am a fan of layering pearls with gold or sparkly chains. You can attach them to any shoe that has laces: combat boots, snow boots, anything! My favorite thing is to pair them with my Air Force 1s that I linked below, but I have seen a lot of people wear them with the trendy colored sneakers, so I’ve linked those as well.

5. Wide-Leg Jeans
I’ll be honest with you: it took me a lonnnng time to hop on the trend of not wearing skinny jeans or jeggings. I know…it’s very millennial of me, but listen: when I think of boot-cut or flare jeans, I think of middle school and high school. I’m very grateful to say I had great middle school and high school experiences…but when I look back at my middle school and high school FASHION…well….
Similar to the wool coat, eventually I caved. But I will only wear wide-leg jeans. I still haven’t accepted the flares or boot cuts yet. If you are also in love with wide leg jeans, I can attest that I get a million compliments on these American Eagle jeans every time I wear them. I have them in ripped and not ripped, but when I wear the ripped ones, people lose their minds. I love pairing these with a cropped top, bodysuit, or sweater that’s been tucked in in the front.

6. The “Old Money” Aesthetic
I never thought I’d see the day that loafers were no longer just for old men…but alas, here we are. Loafers are just one of many things that come to mind when I think “old money”…along with white button downs and tweed suits (all of which I have linked below).
I think there’s an art in mastering how to look expensive without actually dropping a bag on your entire outfit, and that is part of the concept behind the “old money” aesthetic. Old money is all about looking timelessly elegant without appearing overly flashy. People who pull this off well look very put together, but in more of an understated way. You’ll see the stuff linked in this section is more classic and doesn’t scream “brand name,” even though I did link some understated brand name options.
I’m all about dressing for the vibe of the place that I’m going, and I feel like you can make the “old money” aesthetic fit in really well in a multitude of places. For instance, you can pull off this look in cities like New York City and Chicago, because…well…they’re expensive. But you can also work the old money vibe into beach vacations when it gets warmer (think long, crocheted dress and summer bucket hat with a stylish tote bag).
- Pro Tip: Much of my personal aesthetic is centered around looking expensive while still keeping a lot of my outfit budget-friendly. I have found that two of the easiest ways to do this are to either wear all black (see next section) or to incorporate one higher-end piece that can elevate the look of my outfit as a whole.

7. All Black Everything
I think we can all agree that All Black Everything never goes out of style. I love bright colors when it’s warm out, but as soon as the first leaf turns in the fall, my aesthetic goes from modern femme to The-Undertaker-Meets-NYC-Fashion-Week. I am consistently obsessed with wearing all black in the wintertime year after year. Expect to see this category on this post each year when I update for the season (but with new shopping options, of course).
SO…that begs the question: which black options am I currently obsessed with? So glad you asked…
